The Way of the Path
This is the way of the path: to remember that the truth of who we are is not in the body’s sufferings. Through the voice of John’s gospel (14: 1-14), Jesus says that the place he made ready is in his father’s house. I think of that house as humankind and the father as love itself. Jesus calls the father, Abba, the love of deep affection that children have for their parents. It is intimate, pure love belonging to all. It sweeps away the clutter in our inner room as it makes way for remembering twia.
I do nothing to receive Abba’s love. It is what I am as twia. The room within, once darkened by clutter, is now empty of all but twia’s light. The me of the body created a mess in the room, stuffing it unknowingly with the pain of unfulfilled desires and expectations. Locked doors kept me from seeing. But by no longer reliving the past, but living rather in the moment, with no thought for the morrow, the room is clear for the fulfilling grace of twia to be fully present in my awareness. I choose to live in that room simply, with patience and compassion, for out of compassion comes a new world of loving kindness instead of suffering.
To remember is to recognize the truth of what we are. John’s message, through Jesus, is that we are the way. Let’s not limit being the way to Jesus alone, for I believe that each of us can say: I am the way; I am truth; I am life. Why? Because we are. I think this is what John asks us to recognize. He has Jesus say, the way to the father is through me so that we can remember that the way to love is through what I AM, which is twia. I AM that which I am, and what I am is love.
John’s gospel reminds us to heed the love within by recognizing that we are that love. He has Jesus speaking for us so that we can hear our own truth through one who lived it. When it is said that I am in the father and the father is in me, we can hear that we are love because love is in us, as us. This love is with us constantly, even when we do not listen, because it is twia. Anyone who comes to know twia knows love and is radiant. Through twia, there is nothing that cannot be done to change this world from one of fear and suffering to one of love and peace.
