In contemplation
Who am I?
This is one of the great existential questions. Mystics and philosophers have struggled with it for centuries. Let us contemplate some of their teachings.
Day 3
Consciousness resonates throughout existence. Its vibrations harmonize as creation. Let the tune play uninterrupted. Accept the music without desire or expectation. Listen without judgment or hope. Each note rings true in the present. Moment by moment the song of life plays out.
You are the vibrating that brings about existence. You are the energy expressing all that you experience as the me of the body. You have forgotten this. A cloud of unknowing lies between you and your true nature. In this cloud you are ignorant about who you are and fearful of the oblivion you see as death.
Ignorance and fear stretch your mind into the past and future. Stay in the moment, not in your memories or anticipations. Actions take place now, not yesterday or tomorrow. You experience existence as it happens. The present is life’s reality.
Each moment may not seem much different from what was or will be, but it is unique to you. You are the one experiencing its existence. The moment is active. The past is memory and the future is imagination.
You may see the past as real, and the reality of the future can loom large, but neither exists except in mind. The me of the body experiences existence in real time. Each moment is present to your senses. You perceive an event as it happens. You remember the event later. A future event is yet to arrive.
You may remember something as pleasurable and desire more, or you felt pain and wish to avoid it next time. But beyond pleasure and pain, there is joy. Joy lingers within waiting to be received. Joy has no desire. It holds no expectations. It neither judges nor hopes. Joy is whole and complete. It has no opposite. Joy is love without fear.
You are joy. Joy is the song of love singing throughout the whole of existence. But you do not hear your own voice. You let the cloud of unknowing get in the way. Live in the moment with ears that hear. Then you will know the joy that you are. You are the one. There is no other.
