In contemplation
Who am I?
This is one of the great existential questions. Mystics and philosophers have struggled with it for centuries. Let us contemplate some of their teachings.
Day 16
Separation appears to breach the continuity of consciousness. That perceived breach results in your birth as a thought of existence. Without birth you would not be the expression of separation that you are.
As a form of separation, you are mortal. Your true nature is consciousness expressing separation as your existence. You are the expressing. You are the dancing that is the dance. You might say that you are the immortal expressing mortality.
Because mortality is a construct of separation, your immortality is tied up in your existence. You cannot be immortal without existence, and because you exist you are not immortal.
The continuity of consciousness is immortal. You are a breach of that immortality. You do not last. When you recognize that you are neither mortal nor immortal, you touch on the eternal. You are closer to your true nature.
The eternal does not know immortality because it is not mortal. Consciousness has no qualities. There is nothing with which to compare it. It cannot be described by such terms as immortality and mortality. The reality of consciousness is without opposites. At best you are aware of this, but this reality is beyond comprehension.
Meanwhile, do not see yourself as mortal or immortal. The me of the body will die but it is not you. Leave the me of the body to itself. Recognize, instead, the whole of existence as one. There is nothing that is not consciousness in existence.
So, live out your life as a physical presence but do so from your true nature as wisdom and joy. Then the way of the path is revealed. Follow the path spontaneously. Let joy be your guide. Wisdom will give you peace of heart in all situations.
