In contemplation
Who am I?
This is one of the great existential questions. Mystics and philosophers have struggled with it for centuries. Let us contemplate some of their teachings.
Day 49
Explaining the inexplicable takes many paths and many gods. The explanations are all words, neither right nor wrong. The answer they portray lies in what is best for you. In truth, no one knows. All are seeking a way out of ignorance. Pick your path. Believe it in earnest with an open mind until a new way is revealed to you.
Be sincere. Open your heart to possibilities. Over time, systems and theories fall away. Rites and rituals lose their power. Ignorance and fear give way to wisdom and joy.
Joy is your true nature. Be steadfast in its ways. Let thoughts and feelings, words and actions align themselves with joy’s wisdom as your inner guide.
Now is the moment. You can live in the past all you want. You can imagine the future forever. You can only act now. Let your guide lead the way. Its actions are the harbingers of things to come. What comes next is in the moment.
Stop doing. Live life now, not in the past or future. Be aware of your being in the moment. Be life’s witness. Observe thoughts, feelings, and actions without owning them. Let them happen. Accept all with peace of heart. This is to do nothing. To do nothing is to be fully aware of each moment as it is.
Awareness focuses the mind. It strengthens your presence in the world. At the very center of separation is the false perception that you are different from all else. This creates tension and chaos in you and your world, leaving you to desire pleasure and happiness while fearing pain and sorrow. Between desire and fear you live your life. Both poles being only states of mind. As long as you see yourself as the me of the body you are attached to these ways. Free yourself from the body. Bring awareness to the moment.
The mind protects the body with the will to live. The body’s most basic desire is survival. Its most basic fear is oblivion. When you look inward, you sense that you are more than this basic state of being. There is something beyond the body that is much more basic to your true nature. You begin to seek identity, meaning, and fulfillment through various paths and gods. Finally, you leave it all behind in awareness of the moment. In that moment you are neither being nor becoming. You are that which I AM.
